On Thursday May 21st 2009 GWP Rescue Inc and Midwest PAWs were notified of 26 dogs that were seized by local animal control in Branson, MO. From a backyard breeder there were 19 puppies and 9 adults. The owner was allowed to keep 4 adult females and one adult male to continue his breeding practices. Although his breeding facility is unlicensed he is recognized as a hobby breeder. His breeding facility was contaminated with parvovirus and the pointers were infected with this deadly virus. The owner even admitted that his pointers were not vaccinated in general.
The pointers from his care are suffering from a variety of medical conditions. Before necessary care could be given two pups were lost to parvovirus. All of these pointers were exposed to this virus, which made it difficult to find a facility that would care for them for fear of an outbreak. The infected puppies with parvovirus are in private medical care where they are cared for 24/7 and isolated to further prevent the spread of this virus. They will stay at this facility until they are medically cleared.
As for the adult dogs, their health has been medically compromised for lack of proper veterinary care. One female appears to have a severe uterine infection and is being transferred to the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine where she will be cared for. Her name is Baby and she is the solid liver female . It is apparent that she has recently had puppies and there are nowhere to be found. She is in critical condition as she is fighting this infection. As for the rescue efforts for these dogs it has been very difficult to find a facility willing to treat them as they have all been exposed to parvovirus and are at max capacity with the holiday weekend. The dogs were very dehydrated, riddled with tick and fleas causing them to be anemic, and the adults are underweight. We are hoping the adults are not heartworm positive, as we have no medical records showing proof of basic medical care such as vaccinations and preventatives.
The care for these infected pups will be in the thousands and the adults have long road ahead of them. The adults have been transferred to an emergency animal hospital where they can receive the much needed care. The cost for their care will be very expensive and we need your help restoring their health. Three months ago Midwest PAWs has recently cared for many GSPs from another badly run breeding facility in the state of Missouri. This is the second one needing our help urgently with pointers in poor medical condition. As we continue to help many deserving GSPs we are in need of monetary donations for their medical care.
